Lockitron - Keyless Entry Using Your Phone... as a Key

Lockitron - Keyless Entry Using Your Phone... as a Key

    This feels like the future.

A future in which grandparents will no longer understand how to lock and unlock their door.

    Instacube

    Instacube

It seems that prefixing "Insta-" to your name is a super way to get a frightening amount of money in a short period of time.

If you were one of the 3,434 backers of the Instacube you can expect to be the toast of your hipster circle of friends for about 15 seconds at some point when it ships in the coming months.

    Logitech Washable Keyboard

    Logitech Washable Keyboard

Perhaps if you really scrub this thing hard enough the Logitech logo can wash off... nah it will still look like a plasticy piece of shit.

    Polaroid Z2300

    Polaroid Z2300

This looks like the ultimate party camera.

The headline feature is of course the integrated printer. In true Polaroid tradition it uses a chemical process ("ZINK technology") so there's no messy ink or ribbons. Also since the camera takes an SD card you could even use this as a printer-on-the-go to print pictures off the card of another camera.

Best of all the photos have a peel-off sticky back for instant hijinks

The camera itself is decent featuring a 10MP sensor, a color LCD

    XD Design Solar Window Charger

    XD Design Solar Window Charger

XD Design (formerly XD Modo[1]) design some beautiful products which generate all sorts of online buzz, but in the past (as XD Modo) their products were primarily distributed through wholesale channels which made it somewhat difficult for the average consumer to obtain them. Wholesale is still a large part of their business, but there is good news now for consumers with XD Design's new website www.xddesign.eu where you can browse their online catalogue and find retail outlets throughout the UK and Europe that stock their products.

You might like this beautiful solar charger (pictured above) which can stick to your window and charge your iPhone and many other gadgets that draw power over USB. It contains a rechargeable battery so it's not directly transferring the solar energy to your gadget, it stores the charge for immediate or later use. It can take up to 13 hours to fully charge the internal battery from sunlight, but if you're in a hurry it can quickly juice up from mains power through a mini USB input. To top it off its 11x11cm footprint makes it almost pocket sized - ideal for travellers.

Find more info at XD Design, or buy it on Amazon. Also check out their new "Solar Tree", it's very cute, we may write about it soon.

    1. Please note: we had previously published an article expressing our frustration with certain aspects of the old XD Modo website which (at this time of writing) is still live. XD Design however were very gracious in contacting us to let us know about their new site which addresses many of the concerns we had raised. They're a classy bunch of guys.

The Cryoscope - Haptic Weather Forecaster

The Cryoscope - Haptic Weather Forecaster

Robb Godshaw's Cryoscope[1] is a funky, internet connected, aluminium cube which he describes as a "Haptic Weather Forecaster". "Haptic" is a fancy way of saying it relies on your sense of touch to convey its information. In a nutshell: you touch it to feel how warm or cold it is outside.

Robb can explain it better than us:

What you don't see in the video or pictures are the external controller and power supply. Working those into a finished commercial design may be Robb's biggest challenge in taking it to market. We wish him well - it's a great concept.

    1. Cryoscope - A scientific instrument you look through to view a very sad movie?

The Chrono-Shredder: Wall Calendar and Allegory for a Misspent Life

The Chrono-Shredder: Wall Calendar and Allegory for a Misspent Life

The Chrono-Shredder is an artwork by Susanna Hertrich which serves a dual purpose as both handsome wall calendar and cheerful allegory for the shredded tatters of your misspent, frittered away, irreversibly wasted, miserable life.

    The HoverBar from TwelveSouth

    The HoverBar from TwelveSouth

In TwelveSouth's promotional video for HoverBar, the iPad is smartly standing to attention next to the user's monitor, it looks pretty perky actually. The obvious concern is that if the cable isn't rigid enough, it may start to droop and look a little bit sad or sway and move when you touch it. But early reviewers, and this installation video, indicate that if tightened adequately, it should be fine. We also wonder if it will still snap onto the chassis of the next iPad, believed to be announced in March... if the rumours are true and the form factor of the new iPad is largely unchanged from iPad 2, then all should be OK.

Here's some app suggestions to really put that extra screen space to use:

    Wind-up Double-A Battery

    Wind-up Double-A Battery

This is definitely one to add to your Bug-Out-Bag in preparation for the apocalypse.

The imaginatively named "Charge Battery" is a collaboration by South Korean designers Hwang Yeon Gyeong, Kang Myeong Ho, Choe Jeong Ju and Jin Jun Ho. It stores electrical energy from the mechanical energy you apply to it through the winding of a spring by twisting it's casing.

    Charge Battery

For an innovation in the field of Energy there is a refreshing lack of psuedo-scientific claims about the Charge Battery's capabilities and the science behind it seems sound. It's similar to a child's wind-up car in that the mechanical energy from the winding stores potential energy in a spring in the lower section of the battery, but then rather than drive the wheels of a car, the spring drives the shaft in a generator to charge a small rechargeable Ni-mH battery in the upper section.

It doesn't appear to be commercially produced yet and there is little information about the battery life but it's certainly an exciting concept and an award winning design.

    Hand Crafted Leather Cable Band

    Hand Crafted Leather Cable Band

Step 1) Make a beautiful product

Step 2) Hire an expensive photographer to take some great shots (don't bother photoshopping out the earwax from your in-ear headphones)

Step 3) Sell beautiful product on Etsy

Still, it's very tempting to get one or two of these...
